The nominations for the 88th Academy Awards were announced and with it came some heat that for a less than ideal ratio of diversity of amongst nominees (if any). One of the most critically-talked about popular movies of the last year, Straight Outta Compton, didn’t make the cut for “Best Picture” despite an increased push for new diversity initiatives by those in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and broader motion picture community. It at least garnered a nod in the original screenplay category and didn’t come up empty-handed. The big nominees this year are The Revenant, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, with a total of 12 nominations, the most of any nominees, Fury Road, directed by George Miller, with 10 nominations, The Martian, which has seven nominations and was directed by Ridley Scott and Spotlight and Carol, both of which received six nominations. The annual Oscars ceremony will be held on February 28, 2016 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California.
